New York became the 11th state on July 26th 1788. New York is commonly known as
“The Empire State”, a reference to the states wealth and prosperity.
Origin of states name: The name New York comes from the British Duke of York.

Capital city
The state capital of New York is Albany and the state is surrounded by other
states including Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Rhode Island
or which it shares a water border. New York also has a border with Canada and a
long coastline facing the Atlantic Ocean.

California being the other two. Dairy farming is thus a big contributor to the
economy. New York City and state has many corporate Headquarters so the state
has a high number of people working in management positions management.
Publishing, food processing, chemicals production and electronic production are
big contributors to the economy.
State Bird: The state bird of New York is the Bluebird or Sialia WilsonII. The
bluebird has a beautiful singing voice and can be found throughout the country
although it prefers the warmer climate more to the south. The Bluebird is also
the state bird of Missouri.
State Flower: The state flower is the Rose, all varieties and colors. The Rose
comes in numerous varieties and colors and has a characteristic fragrant aroma.
State Song: The state sons is “I love New York” by S. Karmen which sings the
praises of this unique state.
New York – Interesting Facts
New York City has over 700 miles of subway track and over 4 million people
travel on the subway each day.
The infamous Woodstock music festival of the 1960’ was held in New York State.
New York City is known throughout the world as the “Big Apple” which is a
reference to making it big.
Early settler brought the apple seed to New York in the 17th century.
New York city was the original capital of the United States.

Many famous people were born and raised in New York and many famous people call
New York their home today. This includes actors, athletes, authors, politicians
and entertainers. Arguably the most famous natives were the four US presidents
that were born in the US. These were Martin Van Buren the 8th president form
1837- 1841, Millard Fillmore the 13th president form 1850 1853, Theodore
Roosevelt the 26th president from 1901- 1909 and Franklin D Roosevelt the 32nd
president from 1933-45. Other famous native include Rosie O Donnell the
comedian, Tom Cruise the actor and the inimitable actress and singer Barbra
